Learn to Do Aphasia Speech Therapy at Home

Many people with aphasia and their loved ones are very dissapointed with the way speech therapy is provided. Often people are being discharged with the statement of “plateau” or insurance companies or government programs are discontinuing therapy after a specific number of visits no matter what the progress is of the patient with aphasia. In this video Moshe Mark Ittrleman, a speech language pathologist with over 45 years of treating people with aphasia in direct speech therapy has posted this video to stress the importance of spouses, family members and therapists learning what to do to hellp their loved ones talk at home. Many don’t want talking computers and others are just stranded on the fringe with no speech therapy services or anyone who is willing to teach them what to do. Ittleman believes the caregiver or family member should be involvved in the speech therapy process from the very beginning since they are the ones who live with the individual and can make the most progress at home. Scientific studies report that the family and caregivers at home can make just as good progress if not better speech recovery at home if only they were taught what to do at home.
