A one shot to bring in the New Year 🙂
Another year has gone by and a new one is about to start. And here I am watching the love of my life dance with none other but Nick Jonas. It’s New Years Eve and Selena’s parents decided to have a party at their house to bring in the New Year. The adults were off doing their thing while the rest of us were having our own little party out back. Selena was dancing with Nick while Miley was with her new boy toy and Taylor was with Jennifer, Kevin, and his girlfriend. And I’m sitting here, wishing I was Nick. Selena and I have been best friends for years but I haven’t told her I’ve loved her ever since I can remember. I thought this was the year but again, I chickened out; I guess it’s a good thing it’s almost the start of a new year.
“Hey.” I looked up and saw Joe smiling down at me. I smiled back and he sat down next to me while I glanced back toward Selena and Nick.
“Wishing you were him, huh?” Joe was the only one who knew that I liked Selena and it hurt him at first because he liked me but eventually he got over it and he’s been helping me ever since.
“You have no idea.” I said with a sigh. Joe put his arm around me and I leaned my head on his shoulder. I saw Selena look over at us and she gave me a big smile; I tried smiling back but I guess it wasn’t as big because her smile instantly turned into a frown.
“Hey, there’s a minute left!” Jennifer shouted and everyone began chattering excitedly as the seconds ticked by.
“I can’t be here” I said to Joe. He looked at me with understanding in his eyes as he removed his arm.
“Darn and here I thought I was going to get my New Years kiss from you” he said with a wink. I laughed and gave him a kiss on the cheek before I stood up. I quickly slipped away from everyone, making sure no one saw me and I went outside. It was a bit cold but the crisp chillness felt good against my skin. I looked up and the stars and the moon were bright and mesmerizing; I stood out there for a long time, watching the night sky until I heard a soft voice behind me.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” I turned around and saw Selena looking at me, a smile gracing her lips as she glanced at the sky and then looked back to look at me. The moonlight was illuminating her face in a soft glow and she seemed ethereal.
“Yes. So beautiful.” I said softly to her while I kept staring directly into her eyes.
“Champagne?” She lifted two glasses up and handed one to me.
“Where’d you get these from?”
“I snuck them out before my parents saw me.” We both giggled and Selena sat down on the grass, patting the spot next to her.
“Well, bottoms up.” She looked at me and winked and we both took a sip.
“Yuck!” We said at the same time; we broke out into a fit of laughter as we placed our glasses down and scooted closer to each other.
“Why do adults drink? That stuff is gross!” I said with a giggle.
“I have no idea.” I shivered slightly and Selena looked over at me, noticing my shiver. She moved and sat behind me, placing her arms around my waist and pulling me closer to her.
“Wha…what are you doing?” Great, I’m stuttering like an idiot right now.
“Keeping you warm” she said. I could hear the playfulness behind her words and I could see her smirk even though my back was to her.
“Why’d you leave?” She said after a while, breaking the comfortable silence between us.
“I didn’t think anyone would notice.” I said with a sigh as I leaned back against her. Her arms tightened around me and pulled me closer; this felt so right. I believe we were meant to be like this forever but I can’t just find the courage to tell her.
“I noticed.” She whispered in my ear. I shuddered again but this time it was a reaction from feeling her warm breathe hit my overly sensitive skin.
“Still cold?” Yeah, let’s go with that. Before I could answer, I could hear everyone inside starting to countdown.
“Demi, look at me.” I shifted slightly to face Selena; her eyes were shimmering with something unreadable within them.
“Let’s countdown.” She whispered, her face just inches away from mine.
“10” she started off.
“8” She looks so beautiful.
“6” I wish I could tell her.
“4” Should I tell her?
“2” I can’t tell her.
“1” we both whispered at the same time. Suddenly, Selena leaned in and cupped my face in her hands, crushing our lips together. I was shocked but eventually kissed back, knotting my hands in her long hair. My body tingled with warmth and the butterflies in my stomach kept bouncing around. After a while, we both pulled away and we leaned our foreheads against each other, our heavy breathing the only sound heard in the chill night air.
“I’ve been waiting to do every single year but I never got the courage” I smiled and kissed her lips again, feeling so light and carefree.
“I love you, Demi.”
“I love you too, Selena. I’m glad you told me; I wasn’t going to tell you.” Selena chuckled and kissed my cheek.
“I knew it was up to me this year” she said with a giggle. And I’m glad it was.
