Let’s talk about overcoming stuttering. What does it mean for you? And how do we overcome stuttering actually?
Overcoming stuttering is a big topic for us. Usually, we imagine taking some magic pill or using some magic trick. Let’s get real. Let’s listen to the guys from Free From Stutter Challenge who are overcoming stuttering right now. Let’s get a real view from someone who is the trenches at this present moment.
1) What is it, overcoming stuttering?
When we start thinking about stuttering as an issue that we want to solve what are the exact words that come to your mind? How to stop stuttering? How to overcome stuttering? How to get rid of stuttering? What comes to your mind?
I collected a couple gems of the guys’ (Lior, Rudr and Gurdas) wisdom:
Lior: “For me, the right term will be owning and accepting it and working to improve it and understanding that it is not a permanent state. But first, you must accept this reality.”
And what does “overcoming stuttering” mean for you?
Lior: “Don’t let it limit yourself.”
Rudr: “As Lior said, it is about accepting and not hiding from situations or even people. Even if we stutter or have speech impediments it is important to not hide from the situation or avoid people or outside life. It is important to not hide from them; instead, try to be more active and have an open mind. You have to be open-minded about this. Don’t let it embarrass you or don’t let it limit your life anyway.”
Gurdas: “According to me, stuttering is a habit of our mind and body. I used to not go outside, did not interact with people because I feared what people would say but eventually I got to know that it’s my life and if I behave like this then it will get worse. So, it’s a habit and we can change it.”
2) Is it a process or event?
Lior: I believe it’s more of a process than one single event.
Rurd: I also think it’s a long process because stuttering as Gurdas said it’s a habit. It’s a mind-body sort of habit so overcoming stuttering it won’t happen in one day. It’s a long process to change your bad, mental, physical habits, so rather it’s a very long process.
Gurdas: I agree with both of my friends that it’s a process and we have to change our memories and experiences. It takes time to change them.
3) What does it consist of?
Working psychologically and physically and basically expanding your land and reducing the fear. Every time we’re active, every time we get outside our shell we overcome stuttering.
It’s great if we also build a new speaking pattern at the same time. And it all comes down to creating positive speaking experiences. For that, we need the tools that give us enough support to feel the confidence.
4) Where’s the point in time when we can say “I’ve done it?”
Do we need to bother at all and look for this final point?
In fact, this final point exists only in our imagination. There always will be anxiety, there always will be fear. The point is whether it’s holding you back in your life or not.
The point is whether you’re on the right path or not. If you are then at some point, you’ll definitely be able to say that. “I’ve done it!” But the truth is, it’s a journey. When you say “I’ve done it” you always look ahead and see another corner you want to reach.
5) Is it about “fighting it?”
There’s no point in trying to wrestle with stuttering. Stuttering is an automated pattern, our speaking goes pretty much automatically.
So, we want to create a new speaking pattern and I’m preaching about the hand stuttering technique that we all used in the live stream. It’s more than a technique. It’s a way to restore the inner structure of our natural speaking.
